Paper title: Online Partial Discharge Monitoring and Failure Analysis Case Study of a 275 kV Oil-Filled Cable Termination

Back in 2022, online partial discharge (PD) monitoring was set up for Powerlink Queensland to monitor a 275kV oil-filled cable termination. As this cable termination was close to end-of-life, online monitoring was put in place as a safety device to keep a close eye on asset condition.

Brody Ward is the Primary Systems Support Team Leader and Senior Primary Systems Engineer at Powerlink Queensland.

Brody graduated from The Queensland University of Technology in 2015 with a Bachelor's in Engineering (Honours) (Electrical) and Griffith University in 2023 with a Master’s in Business Administration.

Brody has approximately 8 years of experience in the high voltage transmission industry specialising in partial discharge and high voltage primary plant. In his current role, Brody is responsible for providing state-wide technical support for the operation and maintenance of substation primary plant, underground cables and overhead lines.

Thomas is the Senior Engineer at EA Technology Australia and works with utilities and businesses to maintain safe, reliable and efficient power networks. 

He specialises in high and low voltage network solutions and is recognised as an industry expert in partial discharge (PD) detection, asset health and condition monitoring.

As a trusted technical advisor, Thomas plays a key role in identifying, assessing, and mitigating faults in both the high and low voltage network infrastructure. Using data analytics, he delivers proactive maintenance strategies that enhances the reliability of assets, extends its lifespan and prevents failures.

Thomas uses his technical expertise to support companies in their transition towards net zero through the integration of distributed energy resources, improving the visibility of low voltage networks and network resilience. He is passionate about the shift towards smarter and more sustainable energy solutions.
