UHF versus UltraDish: What's the difference when detecting PD?

Both the UHF Directional Antenna and the UltraDish are capable of detecting PD from a distance. However, they do have some differences, which include:

1) Difference in range

  • UltraDish: Up to 20 metres
  • UHF Directional Antenna: Up to 100’s of metres under quiet conditions

2) Difference in the types of PD detected

  • UltraDish: Detects surface PD, corona PD and contact type issues
  • UHF Directional Antenna: Detects surface PD, internal void PD and contact issues. It is capable of detecting corona PD but this can be tuned out

We use both test techniques along with TEV and HFCT testing to give ourselves the best chance at detecting and diagnosing PD.

For more information on the UHF Directional Antenna, check out the ‘sensors’ tab here.
