NGED Load Related Expenditure

  • 25 July 2024

Projects

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) needed to understand how their long-term, load-related expenditure (LRE) needed to support low carbon technologies (LCTs).

NGED are the distribution networks owner (DNO) for four regions (East Midlands, West Midlands, South West England, and South Wales).

Their aim was to determine the network investment needed to support low carbon technologies (LCTs) in the move to Net Zero by 2050.

Why EA Technology:

EA Technology developed the Transform Model® with the distribution networks. With years of work in the electricity industry, our analysis considers practical methods for the energy transition.

We use a clear and thorough approach to check inputs, assumptions and sensitivities, which makes our analysis credible and reliable. This provides insights that help networks to understand how to invest for a Net Zero future.

Our Approach:

Model Update:

We utilised EA Technology’s Transform Model® to deliver the modelling. This allows a parametric, techno-economic assessments of network capacity and constraints. Through this analysis, we identify the technical solutions NGED needs to invest in to accommodate load growth. This load growth was based on LCT uptake in the latest Distribution Future Energy Scenarios (DFES) 2023.

Data Analysis:

We evaluated the forecast Load Related Expenditure (LRE) requirements for Low Voltage (LV), High Volate (HV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV) networks to support the increase in LCTs. This included sensitivity around different LCT scenarios, solutions and clustering considerations. The outputs highlighted the volume of constraints forecasted for each year and the solutions to mitigate them. This identified years when NGED may need to install lots of transformers, cables or smart solutions.

Comparison:

In 2020, we conducted a similar study. The outputs from this NGED study included a comparison against previous forecasts. This ensured that NGED could understand changes in forecasts and align with internal network investment plans.

Client Quote

“David and the team at EA Technology provided us with an excellent service. Working under tight deadlines with the requirement for a number of iterations based on revised datasets, the team delivered high quality outputs and ensured we met our target dates demonstrating both commitment to the plan and adaptability. It was a pleasure to work with such a professional and expert team.” Paul Sadley, Financial Controller, National Grid
